How Does Mr Broome Help Urinary Incontinence?

Mr Broome is vastly experienced in managing urinary problems including cases of stress and urge incontinence.

Urodynamic Studies

Urodynamics refers to the series of tests that are used for diagnosing the cause of incontinence and other types of bladder dysfunction. The investigations may involve taking a medical history, ultrasound scanning, a physical examination and asking the patient to keep a urination diary. There is also a common procedure which assesses how well a patient’s urinary system works; it uses catheters to measure the flow rate as well as the pressure being exerted inside the bladder and on the abdomen. The procedure does not take very long and you should be able to go home the same day with little discomfort.

Medication and Physiotherapy

Mr Broome can offer conservative treatment of urinary disfunction using physiotherapy and medication. Bladder training and/or various exercises to strengthen a patient’s pelvic floor muscles can often prove very effective as a first course of action. There are also certain drugs that can help alleviate the problem, such as duloxetine for stress incontinence and antimuscarinics for urge incontinence.

Surgery

Mr Broome is highly skilled in a range of procedures to treat both stress and urge urinary incontinence. He has a success rate of 90 per cent in a particular operation to combat stress incontinence. The procedure involves inserting a urethral ‘sling’ (a narrow strip of material made of either natural or synthetic material) which sits below and bolsters the urethra. With this extra support, the urethra is able to function properly and prevent urine leaking out. Fortunately, this is a minimally invasive procedure which requires only one small vaginal incision. The operation can take place in just half an hour under either local or general anaesthetic depending on the health requirements of each individual patient. Most patients are then able to go home the same day and find they can return rapidly to normal activities.
